Bio-identical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT) is a specialty of Stroud Compounding. Because there are many opinions regarding BRHT, we asked Danica Garcia (Pharmacist) to fill us in on the facts.
Local Flair: Who should consider hormone replacement therapy?
Stroud Compounding: The body’s natural aging process involves a decline in the body’s hormones resulting in hormonal imbalance. At the same time, we are exposed to environmental and dietary toxins, which also contribute to hormonal imbalance. As a result, you might experience a combination of these symptoms: hot flashes, memory loss, fatigue, intimacy issues, anxiety, depression, mood swings, and poor concentration. If you experience any of these symptoms, you will benefit from hormone replacement therapy.
LF: Tell us the difference between natural hormone replacement therapy vs. BHRT?
SC: “Natural” hormone replacement therapy is a misnomer; in the sense that not everything that comes from natural sources, such as plants and animals, are safe and produce good results. Some of the products available on the market are made from yak or horse urine, and may not be exactly identical in structure as to what the body produces. The more appropriate term to use is bio-identical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT). Bio-identical hormones are the exact replica of the hormones that are naturally produced in the body. Since they are the same structure, they will mimic the effects of estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone in the body. This gives bio-identical hormone therapy the advantage that it will be more effective and produce minimal side effects.
LF: What are the benefits of BHRT?
SC: Aside from the relief of all the symptoms stated above, balancing one’s hormones has proven to have positive effects on the following areas: heart health, improvement on cholesterol levels, promotes healthy bone growth, improves sleep and mood, builds muscles, and improvement with the memory.
LF: Who should NOT consider BHRT?
SC: Some contraindications for BHRT would be women with active liver disease, active or history of breast or uterine cancer, and blood clot.
LF: How long until I see results from BRHT?
SC: Every patient will have a different experience since hormonal therapy varies from person to person. Most patients begin feeling better within a few weeks to months. However, some patients may take longer to feel the effects. Regardless, being compliant and working with your doctor will improve your results.

SC: Aside from the relief of all the symptoms stated above, balancing one’s hormones has proven to have positive effects on the following areas: heart health, improvement on cholesterol levels, promotes healthy bone growth, improves sleep and mood, builds muscles, memory improvement and most importantly – quality of life. My regular encounter with patients is that they are going out of their mind trying to figure out what is wrong with them for the past couple of months. During our initial consultation, I explain that all the symptoms they are experiencing are normal for a women undergoing menopause. But the good thing about it is we have a solution to their problems. And before you know it, patients feel so much better and the hormones do change their lives and their relationships for the best.
