Just outside of the hustle and bustle of downtown Stroudsburg, Gary’s Meat Market calls to the carnivore in everyone. Doing business in Monroe County for 32 years, the family owned and operated shop opened on September 3, 1983. They were first located on 9th Street next to the Arlington Diner, building a good business and building a loyal customer base. The market then moved over to Ann Street for a few years and five years ago relocated to its current premises. “Downtown was great to us, but moving up to Chipperfield Drive gave us new customers,” explains Karen Oney, co-owner with husband Gary. “We’re busy all the time.”
And busy they are – selecting, preparing, and presenting the best of everything for their customers. All of Gary’s meats are cut fresh daily on premises and contain no additives or preservatives. Specializing in all-wood smoking, orders pour in year round for Gary’s homemade kielbasa and double-smoked ham. Known far and wide for the best bacon EVER, one customer details, “It’s just amazing. You can’t buy better bacon and Gary’s prices are the best anywhere – even the supermarket.”
Karen and Gary pride themselves on keeping customers happy. “We work long hours, but it’s all to make everyone happy. And our customers know we can get just about anything,” says Karen. This time of year, it’s all about grilling! Gary has lots of fresh cuts and ground meat – steaks, burgers, hot dogs, and ribs. Savvy shoppers will also want to check out the marinated selections: turkey London broil, turkey tenders, lemon garlic chicken or pork. The market also carries rubs and side dishes like macaroni and potato salad. Their biggest attraction of the summer, though, is the pig roast. Pigs must be ordered ahead of time and Gary will tell you everything you need to know about cooking it.
The Oney daughters, Denise and Robyn, grew up around the family business. “We’re a mom and pop shop. When the girls were old enough they started helping out in the business,” recalls Karen. Today they still help out, Denise frequently interacting with customers on Facebook. During Karen’s recent surgery Denise relayed every single message to her mother, customers sending their wishes for a speedy recovery. These relationships keep the market and customers alike happy. “We love our customers,” repeats Karen, Gary nodding in agreement.
No matter the time of year, Gary’s Meat Market is a one-stop family owned smorgasbord of deliciousness. From heart-shaped Delmonicos for a special date night, fresh sliced chip steak for cheesesteaks, and their famous homemade ring Bologna, Gary’s selections will exceed your expectations for fresh, quality provisions. “Like” them on Facebook or stop in and say, “Hello!” Meeting new customers always makes it a good day at Gary’s.
